What Is Chronic Inflammation? And Why You Should care!

The word Chronic from chronic inflammationhighlighted

Chronic inflammation is not a new subject; it has been studied for decades. However, its importance in various diseases has gained more attention in recent years due to advances in medical research and technology.

Known as “the silent killer,” chronic inflammation impacts millions each year, often going unnoticed until it's too late.

So what exactly is chronic inflammation? And why you should care? These are the questions I will try to answer here in a simple way.

What is Inflammation?

Inflammation is your body’s natural response to injury or infection.

Imagine a mosquito bit you last night while you were peacefully sleeping. When you woke up, you heard the unmistakable bzzzzzzzz near your ear—but it was already too late. 🦟

Today, you notice a red, itchy spot on your arm. Sound familiar?

That’s called acute inflammation—it’s your body’s defense system kicking in to heal the area. And that’s totally normal, it's even an essential process!

However, sometimes inflammation isn’t so kind to you.

What is Chronic Inflammation?

Chronic inflammation is when something meant to protect you ends up causing harm because it never shuts off. Let me clarify.

Sometimes, your body thinks there’s a problem inside when there really isn’t. So it sends your immune system to fight an imaginary enemy, and that constant fight causes chronic inflammation. This is when inflammation sticks around even when there’s no immediate injury or infection.

Imagine you have a security alarm in your house. Acute inflammation is like the alarm going off because there’s an intruder—your body reacts quickly to deal with the threat. After the events you would say "wow, my alarm system is really working as it should".

In case of chronic inflammation, the same alarm is going off for no reason and never shutting off. This is the sign something is not working properly. Over time, the constant noise (inflammation) can start to damage the house (your body).

Why Does Chronic Inflammation Happen?

There are many factors involved:

  • Chronic inflammation can result from infections or injuries that don’t fully heal. For example, certain bacteria or viruses can trigger a lingering immune response.

  • In autoimmune conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues, leading to ongoing inflammation.

  • Long-term exposure to pollutants, chemicals, or irritants can also provoke chronic inflammation.

  • A poor diet high in processed foods, sugar, and unhealthy fats can promote inflammation.

  • Excess fat tissue, particularly around the abdomen, can release pro-inflammatory substances, keeping the immune system in a constant state of alert.

  • Chronic stress can disrupt your body’s immune balance, leading to sustained inflammation over time.

  • As we age, the immune system becomes less efficient, often resulting in a low-grade, persistent inflammatory state known as "inflammaging."

How Chronic Inflammation Affects Your Body

Now you know that chronic inflammation occurs when your body’s natural defense system remains active longer than necessary, even when there’s no clear injury or threat.

This prolonged immune response can start to harm healthy tissues and contribute to the development of various diseases.

Over the past few decades, chronic inflammation has been increasingly implicated in the development of chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, weight gain, diabetes, cancer, neurodegenerative disorders (e.g., Alzheimer’s), some cancers, and even mental health conditions like depression.

Advances in molecular biology and immunology have revealed how chronic low-grade inflammation disrupts normal cellular processes, leading to tissue damage and disease progression.

Some Examples of Chronic Inflammation

- Autoimmune Diseases: Conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells.

- Chronic Conditions: Ongoing health issues like asthma, where inflammation is a continuous problem.

In rheumatoid arthritis, the immune system wrongly identifies joint tissues as threats and attacks them, leading to chronic inflammation and joint pain over time.

Of course there are many more.
